If you study at a university in Pakistan, two numbers follow you everywhere: your GPA and your CGPA. They decide your semester standing, many scholarships, and often whether your CV passes the first screening for internships and jobs. This guide explains both in plain language, with a worked example you can verify by hand.
GPA vs CGPA — the simple difference
- GPA = your average for one semester only.
- CGPA = your average across all semesters so far, weighted by credit hours — a semester in which you took more credit hours counts more.
The standard 4.0 grade-point chart
Most Pakistani universities use the 4.0 scale below, in line with the general framework promoted by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). Treat it as the standard guide: the exact marks boundaries for each grade (for example, whether 85 or 87 earns an A) are set by each university and can differ slightly.
| Grade | Grade points | General standing |
|---|---|---|
| A | 4.00 | Excellent |
| A− | 3.67 | Very good |
| B+ | 3.33 | Good |
| B | 3.00 | Above average |
| B− | 2.67 | Average |
| C+ | 2.33 | Satisfactory |
| C | 2.00 | Pass |
| C− | 1.67 | Weak pass |
| D+ | 1.33 | Marginal pass |
| D | 1.00 | Minimum pass |
| F | 0.00 | Fail |
The formula
GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add them all up, then divide by the total credit hours.
Worked semester example
Suppose a student takes four courses in one semester:
| Course | Credit hours | Grade | Points × Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Programming Fundamentals | 4 | A (4.00) | 16.00 |
| Calculus | 3 | B+ (3.33) | 9.99 |
| English Composition | 3 | A− (3.67) | 11.01 |
| Pakistan Studies | 2 | B (3.00) | 6.00 |
- Total quality points = 16.00 + 9.99 + 11.01 + 6.00 = 43.00.
- Total credit hours = 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 12.
- GPA = 43.00 ÷ 12 = 3.58.
Now imagine a second semester of 17 credit hours with a GPA of 3.20. The CGPA is not simply (3.58 + 3.20) ÷ 2, because the semesters have different weights: CGPA = (3.58 × 12 + 3.20 × 17) ÷ (12 + 17) = (42.96 + 54.40) ÷ 29 = 3.36.
Practical tips
- High-credit courses move your GPA most — give them study time in proportion to their credit hours.
- One F (0 points) in a 4-credit course is very expensive; avoiding a fail is worth more than squeezing one A.
- Check your university's student handbook for its exact marks-to-grade boundaries and repeat-course policy, since these details vary.
