Typing Speed (WPM): What It Means, Good Scores & How to Improve

⏱ 6 minute read · Written for Pakistani students & job seekers

Many government and private jobs in Pakistan β€” data entry operators, clerks, computer operators, stenographers β€” include a typing test. Your score is almost always reported as WPM (words per minute). This guide explains what that number really means, what counts as a good score, and a simple routine to improve.

How WPM is calculated

A β€œword” in typing tests is standardised as 5 characters, including spaces. So if you type 250 correct characters in one minute, your speed is 250 Γ· 5 = 50 WPM. Serious tests count only correct characters, which is why accuracy is part of every honest score β€” including the result on our Typing Speed Test.

What is a good WPM? (general guidance)

SpeedWhat it generally means
Under 20 WPMBeginner β€” hunts for keys; practice will help a lot and quickly
20–30 WPMBasic β€” enough for personal work, below most job-test expectations
30–40 WPMAverage office level β€” the range many clerical/data-entry tests look for
40–50 WPMGood β€” comfortable for most office and computer-operator roles
50–70 WPMFast β€” professional typist territory
70+ WPMExcellent β€” competitive-level speed

These are general guidance ranges, not official standards β€” every department and company sets its own requirement, so always read the test notice in the advertisement.

A simple routine that works

  1. Practise 10–15 minutes daily. Short daily sessions beat one long weekly session, because your fingers learn by repetition.
  2. Look at the screen, not the keyboard. Covering your hands with a cloth for a few minutes a day forces your fingers to memorise key positions (touch typing).
  3. Accuracy first. Slow down until you reach 95%+ accuracy, then let speed rise on its own. Practising mistakes only makes mistakes permanent.
  4. Use the home row. Rest your fingers on A S D F and J K L ; β€” every key is one small movement away from this base.
  5. Test yourself weekly with the same test length (60 seconds is a good standard) and note your WPM and accuracy. Visible progress keeps you motivated.

Before a real job typing test

  • Practise on a physical keyboard if the test centre uses desktop computers.
  • Warm up with a 1-minute test just before, to settle your hands.
  • If you make a mistake, keep going β€” stopping to fix every error usually costs more time than the error itself, unless the test rules say otherwise.

Frequently asked questions

What does WPM mean?

WPM means Words Per Minute β€” how many words you type in one minute. By convention one β€œword” equals five characters (including spaces), so WPM = (characters typed Γ· 5) Γ· minutes.

What typing speed do data-entry and clerical jobs expect?

As general guidance, many data-entry and clerical roles look for roughly 30–40 WPM with high accuracy, while fast professional typists reach 50–70 WPM. Requirements differ by employer β€” always check the specific job advertisement or test notice.

Is accuracy more important than speed?

Usually yes. Employers would rather have 35 WPM at 98% accuracy than 55 WPM full of errors, because mistakes must be found and fixed by someone. Build accuracy first; speed grows naturally with practice.

How long does it take to improve typing speed?

With 10–15 minutes of focused daily practice, most beginners see clear improvement within 3–4 weeks. Progress comes from regular short sessions, not occasional long ones.
